This is a full-resolution version of the NASA Curiosity rover descent to Mars, taken by the MARDI descent imager. As of August 20, all but a dozen 1600x1200 frames have been uploaded from the rover, and those missing were interpolated using thumbnail data. The result was applied a heavy noise reduction, color balance, and sharpening for best visibility. The video plays at 15fps, or 3x realtime. The heat shield impacts in the lower left frame at 0:21, and is shown enlarged at the end of the video.

A Russian research ship has spotted an extremely rare white adult orca, or killer whale, off the coast of Kamchatka for the first time in history. No one knows the reason for the whale's unusual pigmentation. ­The scientists identified the whale by his pure white fin, swimming together with his pod, or family, all of which have the standard black and white coloration. He has been given the nickname Iceberg, and appears to be behaving normally.

Music by Guido Gialdini. This medley was recorded in 1911. Guido's real name was Kurt Abramowitsch and he was born in Berlin in 1878. When he had to stop working in 1933 he could look back to a 40 year career. What happened to him after 1933 is not known. Gialdini recorded for all major labels and his whistling was also requested in music halls everywhere. This is a medley from Leo Falls operetta on an American Victor.
